Guy Clark

A sculptor slowly chips away at marble or wood, letting the sculpture that "lives" inside reveal itself. Like a fine artist, Guy Clark allows "the truth" of his songs to reveal itself. Then, like a fine craftsman, once the songs emerge, he slowly hones and polishes them. That's the art of songwriting, and that's why Guy Clark is a songwriter's friend.

From "Desperadoes Waiting For a Train," a saga worthy of a John Ford classic western to the humor and simplicity of "Homegrown Tomatoes," Clark presents –in vivid detail- vignettes which are truthful, insightful and brilliantly crafted. In addition to "Desperadoes," his "Heartbroke," "She's Crazy For Leavin," and "The Last Gun Fighter's Ballad" have enriched contemporary music and scored hits for the highway men, Rodney Crowell, Ricky Skaggs and Vince Gill. Emmylou Harris calls Guy Clark a true "American Poet".

With the release of his first album, "Old No.1" in 1975, Clark established himself - along with the late Townes Van Zant - as a member of "The Texas Poet School" and a pioneer of Austin's burgeoning "roots" movement. Ten albums later, he has become an icon of all that is real and good in what has become known as "Americana" music. With the release of "Cold Dog Soup" on Sugar Hill in 1999, Clark closed out the last millennium with a quarter-century of thoughtful, provocative and compelling music. His lyrics alone, read aloud, ring with the true voice of a consummate artist in complete control of his oeuvre.

Songs like "Randall Knife" ache with details that can only be discovered by one who lovingly observes and remembers life's incredibly beautiful but ephemeral pictures - capturing them for those of us who maybe only see them now for the first time. Come discover the music of Guy Clark: the humor, the pathos, and the heart. Recently Jimmy Buffet discovered Clark's, "Boats To Build," and Guy has made his mark with young artists such as Brad Paisley, who just recently cut "Out In The Parkin' Lot" for his new album Time Well Wasted. Find what other artist - From Nanci Griffith to Johnny Cash - have always known: Guy Clark's songs are filled with "Stuff That Works" and the world of music and the world in general is a better place for it.
